I Don't Like Pink Roses

 PaHoney
Back to Full Blog

So I'm still three years old and living with my grandparents. Like I mentioned before, I called my grandma Mamaw because I had an older cousin and half-sister (though I consider her a sister just like my younger one) who called him that. But when it came to my grandpa, this is where I got confused.

The older kids called him Pa from the time they could talk. So I heard that all of the time. On the other hand, Mamaw called him "honey" when she talked to him, so now I was completely lost. So within my brilliant mind I came up with the name "PaHoney"! Mamaw said at first it sounded like "pawney" and she would correct me.

The name has stuck and all the grandkids and now great grandkids that have come around call him that as well. Everyone thinks it's such a cute idea and credit it to my brilliantness. Heck, I was just trying to figure out what to call him - Pa or Honey. I figured that I couldn't go wrong if I said both. I still call him that and I am 23. It would seem weird to call him something else.

You know he's very proud of being called that just because you gave him the name!

For some reason, my youngest child, now 17, started calling me MAMA around the age of 3(?) and I hated the sound of that! So I kindly suggested she could call me..."Ma-Mommy" if she wanted to. So now to my other two kids, I'm "mom" but her pet name remains. I love it. It's our special thing we have between the two of us...I have my nickname for her and she has one for me.

Next Subject: As a preschool teacher, I had a lot of experience with the different things my students would call their grandparents...there was grandma, grandpa, granny, gramps, pa-pa, memaw, meme, grandpop, gigi...(that's all I can remember right now, it's been two years since I quit.) Fascinating...I want to be 'grammy' when I'm a grandparent!

Enjoying your memories! Keep it up! Pretty soon you'll have a BOOK!

I have enjoyed reading your blog so far.

I hope you continue to post... it really is theraputic.

My parents went through a messy divorce when I was 7 years old. They split on Christmas. I dont remember too much prior to the divorce. Afterwards I lived with my mom who still depended on my Dad. I found out when I was 21 that though he raised me and put up with a lot of negativity from my mom he is not my biological dad. She will not tell me who is.

I dont have a "feel" yet for how your relationship is with your family now. Mine is strained at best. But I have learned a very important lesson. Its not only blood that makes a family and life can be good. Okay, two lessons lol

Have a great day!
